The TOGLE TOGNON Group is a training for women basket makers from GANVIE, commune of SO-AVA in Benin. We manufacture objects of art and decoration but also utilities based on water hyacinth. Indeed, the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an invasive plant strongly present in the water bodies of West Africa, which has negative effects on biodiversity, on lake circulation and water flow. agricultural products, and on the climate. Its proliferation on bodies of water suffocates aquatic resources, especially fish, and prevents their growth. During its development, the water hyacinth forms clusters of hyacinths which move together and obstruct the waterways of the lake. Like any natural plant, it dies at the end of its development cycle but gives off methane and carbon dioxide, which are powerful greenhouse gases. Consequently, it has enormous negative effects and constitutes a major environmental problem for the lake populations. It also slows down socio-economic activities by making it difficult, on the one hand, to fish, and on the other hand, lake transport and the flow of agricultural products to markets.
